Time - The Final Frontier

Where does time go? The time needed to write a blog is not as easy to find as you think when you start one. I know - Common Sense - Duh!

After a year in the Quality world, opportunities for improvement are abundant. You see how organizations get work done and the amount of improvement that is possible. I still believe one of the best ways to see the improvement opportunities is from a quality management experience. You touch every functional area. You witness the waste across all of the cross functional "white spaces".

What is the Quality Managers role in all of this opportunity? Identify, prioritize and lead and or assist improvement initiatives. One interesting aspect is that since you, as a Quality Manager see and discuss the opportunities with senior management and executives, you tend to get tapped on the shoulder to lead and project manage the larger efforts!

At the company I work for, these are known as Corporate Goals. This is where a background of Project and Program Management helps tremendously to lead large cross functional projects. You need to understand how to efficiently lead a group of functional "leaders" to reach an aggressive goal.

My point in all of this? An important skill for a Quality Manager includes the knowledge and experience in large program and project management. Experience in leading such efforts will assist you in leading the big ones: Corporate Goals!
